All About Scholarships for 2021 To support the cost of attending post-secondary school, there are a variety of scholarship awards and bursaries available to apply for. You may be surprised to discover that there are opportunities for childhood cancer and brain tumour survivors specifically. It's worth reading on!
Student Loans/Grants Information and applications for government funding for post-secondary education is available from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Depending on your financial situation, you may qualify for loans and/or grants from the provincial and/or federal government. To get an idea of your potential to receive a loan, we recommend you try the OSAP aid estimator. Even if you qualify for as little as $1 in loans from OSAP, this opens the door to other scholarships and bursaries within the loan program (e.g., see Students with Disabilities below) so think twice about deciding not to apply. Student loans and lines of credits are also available from most financial institutions. Scholarships/Bursaries Schools offer entrance scholarships to those with high grades. Other scholarships and bursaries will have an application and selection process. Funding may be specific to a school or a field of study. Some scholarships and bursaries are open to members of a specific group (e.g., service club or organization, high school, children of parents employed at a company). Not all scholarships/bursaries depend on grades. Your high school guidance counsellor or the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend may be able to help you. Search for scholarships online at www.studentawards.com and www.scholarshipscanada.com. 2021 Scholarships for Childhood Cancer Survivors Note: Most of these scholarships will require a medical letter from your hospital confirming diagnosis. This can usually be obtained through your POGO AfterCare Clinic. Let your POGO Transitions Counsellor know if you need support with obtaining this letter.
Students with Disabilities When completing your OSAP application, indicate that you have a disability. You will need a physician or nurse practitioner to complete the OSAP disability forms. If you qualify for financial assistance through OSAP, you may also qualify for OSAP’s Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) and Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Persons with Permanent Disabilities. These programs may provide money for things like tutoring, equipment, etc. You can find out about scholarships and bursaries for students with disabilities studying at Canadian universities and colleges at www.disabilityawards.ca and www.neads.ca.
